RESOURCE AREA:
1. Doorways/Throughways
1) Are entrances to the lab's building and to rooms within the building accessible? (See ADAAG 4.13, generally).
2) Are door width openings at 32" minimum when open at 90 degree angle? (See ADAAG 4.13.5)
3) Is threshold height no more than ½” from floor surface for swinging door? ( as opposed to sliding doors where 3/4" is allowed). (See ADAAG 4.13.8).
4) Door-weight-force adjusted to open with no more than 5 lbf (foot pounds of force) (See ADAAG 4.13.11).
5) Is all door control hardware operable with a closed-fist, typically using lever-operated doors, as opposed to traditional door knobs? (See ADAAG 4.13.9).
6) Is door hardware mounted at no more than @ 48” height from the floor? (See ADAAG 4.13.9).
7) Are all Throughways/aisles at least 36” in continuous width? (See ADAAG 4.3.3)
2. Tables / Counters/ Desks/Cubicles/Chairs –
1) Clear Floor Space Seating (minimum clear floor space to allow for one person using a wheelchair to be seated) @ 30” by 48” (See ADAAG 4.2.4.1); To allow for person using a wheelchair to turn & exit seating area a 60”x60” clear floor space is ideal (See ADAAG Appendix 4.2.3, and Figure A2)
2) Knee Space @ 19” deep x 30” wide x 27” high --- from table edge, or edge of table skirt to finished floor (of the 30” by 48” under table, See Figure 45)
3) Table surface height --- top to Floor @ 28”–34” (ADAAG 4.32.4, for more information about specific table workstations see Table 4.1 in ADAAG Appendix 4.32.4)
4) Adjustable features to Table: Tray for Keyboard and Trackball Mouse relative to Desk Surface (the following do not reflect ADAAG requirements as there are none specific for computer work stations; however the following do represent best practices in adaptive technology, and they do comport with general ADAAG principles regarding knee clearance, etc.).
5) Distance from Keyboard to Monitor at 30” (the preceding does not reflect ADAAG requirements as there are none specific for computer work stations; however the recommendation does represent best practices in adaptive technology).
6) Ergo Chairs with Adjustable Arm Rests to Table /Desk Surface ” (the preceding does not reflect ADAAG requirements as there are none requiring ergonomic chairs; however the recommendation does represent best practices in adaptive technology).
7) Aisles between tables must be a minimum of 36” width to allow clearance around desks (See ADAAG 4.3.3, see also Figure 7 (a) & (b)).
8) There should be no protrusions in to accessible route (See ADAAG 4.4.1 & 4.4.2)
3. Floor Surface/Slopes/Levels
1) Is the flooring surface is stable and firm? (See ADAAG 4.5.1, see also Appendix 4.5.1 for more guidance)
2) Is floor is level? (See ADAAG 4.5.2)
3) Is carpet is securely attached, & with a maximum pile thickness
of ½”? (See ADAAG
4.5.3)

1) Are there directional signs indicating where accessible features are, & where areas of primary functions are within the larger facility? (See ADAAG 4.30 generally)
2) The signage indicating Room/Facility identification must:
5. Pamphlet / Materials DisplaysBook Shelves
1) Is there is a 30” x 48” clear floor space in front of display / bookshelves (to allow for a forward, or a parallel approach by a person using a wheelchair, or other mobility aid)? (ADAAG 4.25.2)
2) Does the configuration allow for a side reach to shelves @ 9”-54” height from floor? (ADAAG 4.25.3, see also Figure 6), or
3) does it allow for a front reach to shelves @ 15”-48”
height from floor? (ADAAG
4.25.3, see also Figure
5)
6. Controls relative to Desks/Cubicles/Tables
1) Are controls & operating mechanisms, such as light switches, emergency alarm pulls, electrical sockets, phones etc., mounted at heights between 9”-54” from the floor on parallel approach? (ADAAG 4.25.3, see also Figure 6), or
2) are they mounted at heights between 15”-48” from
the floor on frontal approach? (ADAAG
4.25.3, see also Figure
5)
