Disability Law Research Project on The Americans with Disabilities Act

The Disability Law Research Project (DLRP) on ADA offers information, training, and technical assistance on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  This important civil rights law provides persons with disabilities certain protections in the areas of employment, public accommodations, state and local governmental services, and  telecommunications.

Whether the ADA will make hoped-for differences depends on how well
information about the act and its regulations is disseminated and understood.
The Center on ADA has been active in spreading the word about the ADA and in educating targeted groups about provisions that affect them.  Funded by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Center is one of the ten regional disability and business technical assistance centers around the country that is providing such assistance.  It serves Federal Region VI, which is composed of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Center is based at the Independent Living Research Utilization
(ILRU) program of The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) in
Houston, Texas.  Partners in the Center on ADA include the Consumer Education Foundation of the Better Business Bureau in Austin, Texas, and the Faculty of the Center for Legal and Regulatory Studies at The University of Texas at Austin and the Health Law and Policy Institute at the University of Houston, as well as independent living centers and consumer and business groups in the five-state area.

The primary target audience for the Center on ADA is business people.
Other groups targeted are employers, individuals with disabilities, state and
local governments, human service providers, voluntary associations,
educational institutions, and professional groups.  The Center is providing
ADA-related information to all of those groups using a variety of media.  The
Center has access to the latest ADA materials, assuring that any technical
assistance provided will be based on the most up-to-date ADA information.

Center staff can provide referrals for those who need consultation
services regarding the ADA.  Staff at the Center and staff at independent
living centers and Better Business Bureaus in a number of cities over Region
VI have received comprehensive training on the ADA and are available for
presentations and trainings.

Requests for ADA information, questions about the ADA or inquiries about
the Center activities should be phoned to (800) 949-4232 (V/TDD),
(713) 520-0232 (voice), or (713) 520-5136 (TDD).
